News Today : Kolkata Knight Riders suffered a six wickets defeat against Chennai Super Kings in the match no. 49 of Indian Premier League 2020 on Thursday and with the loss they remained at fifth position in the points table with 13 points from 12 games.
With this loss, KKR’s playoffs hopes are almost over as now they can accumulate maximum 14 points and considering their extremely inferior NET RUN RATE, Kolkata are staring down the barrel. Needless to say, they are all but out of the playoff race.
Notably, the win won’t be useful for CSK as they are already eliminated from the IPL 2020 and are at the bottom of the points tally – with just 10 points from 13 games.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians on Wednesday thrashed Royal Challengers Bangalore by five wickets in the match no. 48 of Indian Premier League 2020 to extend their lead at the top of the IPL 2020 points table.
Chasing a modest 165-run target, MI rode on SuryaKumar Yadav’s unbeaten 79 off just 43 balls to cross the finishing line with five balls to spare. They now have 16 points from 12 games a net run rate of +1.186.
Also, RCB remained on the second spot with 14 points from 12 games and a NRR of +0.048.
Mumbai Indians qualify for playoffs
Mumbai Indians is currently on top with 16 points and a better net run rate (NRR) than anyone else.
Mumbai have a NRR of 1.186.
With KKR losing against CSK, only four teams – MI, RCB, DC, KXIP, can get to 16 points, which means that Mumbai Indians are now the first team to officially qualify for the playoffs.
What RCB need to make it to playoffs round
RCB are second in the table with 14 points from 12 matches.
They need to win one of their remaining matches to seal their place in the playoffs.
However, if KKR and KXIP win both of their remaining matches and DC also end up with at least 16 points then there is a possibility of five teams on 16 points and in this scenario, a team with a better NRR will go through.
If they lose all their remaining matches then they will have to hope that one of KKR or KXIP lose one of their remaining matches. If KKR and KXIP win both of their remaining matches then they would need DC to lose all their remaining matches and then a team with a better NRR will qualify for the playoffs.
Meanwhile Delhi Capitals are third in the tally after losing their third consecutive game which was against SRH. They have 14 points from 12 games.
Delhi Capitals in trouble after losing their third consecutive game
DC now should win next two games to be sure of a playoff spot.
DC’s remaining two games are against the Mumbai Indians and the Royal Challengers Bangalore. DC’s net run rate (0.03) has taken a big hit after defeat against SRH and has gone below Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad. If the Capitals lose their last two games by their NRR will go below further and Kings XI can go past them.
KXIP’s win over KKR in Sharjah means 16 points won’t secure a playoff spot for the time being as up to five teams can potentially get to 16 points as of now.
1 Victory in next two matches can create issues for DC. KXIP will have to lose a minimum 1 game out of 2 for DC to qualify with just a win from next two games.
Notably, Sunrisers Hyderabad thrashed Delhi Capitals by 88 runs in the match no. 47 of Indian Premier League 2020 on Tuesday to move to sixth position in the IPL 2020 points table and keep their playoffs hopes alive.
Defending a massive 220-runs target, SRH bowled out DC for mere 131 runs in 19 overs. They now have 10 points from 12 games.
Meanwhile, Kings XI Punjab thrashed Kolkata Knight Riders by eight wickets in the match no. 46 of Indian Premier League 2020 on Monday to replace KKR at the fourth spot in the IPL 2020 points table.
With this the playoff race has got more intensified. Check what more is required for KXIP to qualify for playoffs –
Kings XI Punjab
Sixteen points will ensure KXIP progress into the playoffs without any riders which means they have to win both their remaining games.
However, if they lose one of their last two games and finish on 14, then things will get tricky. At this stage, 5 teams can potentially finish on 14 or more points.
Knight Riders or the Rajasthan Royals, Sunrises Hyderabad
If it comes down to NRR, the Kings XI don’t have much to worry from the Knight Riders or the Rajasthan Royals, but the Sunrisers Hyderabad have a better NRR, which will further improve if they win their last two games and finish on 14. However, the Sunrisers’ last two games are against the top two teams – the Mumbai Indians, and the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals, who outplayed Mumbai Indians by eight wickets on Sunday, are currently seventh in the IPL 2020 points table. They have 10 points in their bag as they have won five out of their 12 games.
