Abu Dhabi court has fined a young man a large sum of money for sending defamatory messages to a woman’s phone through the WhatsApp. The fine was 2,70,000 dirhams (more than half a crore Indian rupees).
The accused was charged with violating the provisions of the IT Act. Defamation on the Internet is punishable by a fine of between AED 250,000 and AED 500,000 in the UAE. Woman lodged a complaint with the police after presenting the messages received. The police completed their investigation and handed over the case to the prosecution. The court later heard the case and fined the young man Dh250,000.
The woman filed a civil case seeking compensation for the mental distress she faced. The court also ordered the woman to pay 20,000 dirhams in damages in the case. However, the woman approached the apex court seeking further compensation but the court did not approve it.
